Winter Solstice
The Winter Solstice occurs on December 21/22 in the northern hemisphere. It is the shortest day of the year after which the days begin to lengthen once again. The return of the sun has been celebrated for thousands of years around the world in various cultures such as the Hopi Festival of Soyal, Greece’s Brumalia, the Hindu celebration of Makar Sankranti, and the Celtic Yule or Alban Arthan.
This candle smells like wassail, think mulled wine with orange, cinnamon, clove, and a touch of pine. It is topped with cinnamon chips (warmth) and pine needles (in winter evergreens are a reminder that the world is not dead, but only sleeping) .
The word “wassail” comes from the Old Norse “ves hail” meaning to be in good health or fortunate.
While the term wassail is Norse, mulled wine originated in Ancient Rome. Wine grapes originated in Turkey, cinnamon originated in Sri Lanka, clove originated in Indonesia, orange in China, and pine is found on most continents around the world. We have been sharing our foods cross culturally for a very long time, as well as our celebration of Winter Solstice and the return of the sun!
